The first step in identifying the Manufacturers Part Number (MPN) of your part is identifying the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of your vehicle. Using your VIN is the most accurate way to ensure your part number is correct and matches your vehicle.
What is a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)?
A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique serial number used by the automotive industry to identify individual vehicles. It is usually stamped or displayed on your vehicle, and will always be 17 characters long. For example, Z8NTANT31AS001483.

Each character has a meaning relating to the make, model, year of manufacture and vehicle. Most VIN's can be found displayed on the inside corner of your windscreen, the inside panel of your door frame or the inside panel of your engine bay.
A VIN is important because we can enter it into your manufacturers parts catalogue and find the precise MPN for your vehicle.
What do I do once I have my VIN?
Once you have your VIN you need to enter it into a parts catalogue corresponding to the make of your vehicle. Parts catalogues can been found online, for example at www.epc-data.com.
If we take the 17 digit VIN "Z8NTANT31AS001483" as an example, which has been taken from a 2010 Nissan X-Trail.
When entering the VIN into the Nissan parts catalogue at www.epc-data.com and clicking on search we are presented with a summary of the vehicles features, schematic diagram and parts category list. It's always good to check that the summary details match your vehicle and you have not made a typo when entering the VIN.
How do I find the MPN?
Let's assume we are looking to replace the battery tray for our 2010 Nissan X-Trail. We have the correct parts catalogue for our vehicle but now we need to drill down into the catalogue to find the specific part number for our battery tray.
You may need to do a bit of searching for your particular part but in general the product categories should point us to the correct location. You can also use the sectors on the schematic diagram labelled A,B,C etc. to locate your part.
Body Electrical is the most likely category for a battery tray so let's click on that.
Looking down the category list on the right we quickly come across Battery and Battery Mounting. A battery tray would sit under this category.
Clicking on Battery and Battery Mounting we can now see our battery tray in the schematic diagram identified with code 24428 and also listed on the right as "24428 - TRAY-BATTERY".
Clicking on 24428 - TRAY-BATTERY" we get a summary of the part shown below.
The OEM Part Number is the number we need. In this case the MPN for the battery tray is 24428JU00A or most commonly written as 24428-JU00A.
Therefore when searching for a battery tray for our 2010 Nissan X-Trail we would search for 24428-JU00A and only purchase that part. In doing so we can be 100% certain that it will fit our vehicle.
