Five simple servicing jobs you can do yourself at home

Whenever servicing or working on your car you should always refer to your owners manual, which serves as a roadmap for maintaining your car.

Your manual will provide specifications, steps and recommendations on when to replace fluids, filters, and other components that are crucial for your vehicles performance.

Globes

Maintaining your vehicle lights is important to ensure that you have visibility in low light conditions, can be safely seen by other road users and comply with traffic laws.

There are three separate light circuits to check when looking for a faulty globe. Park, low beam, and high beam. You should check each one separately to ensure all lights are working as expected.

Some vehicles may have separate globes for high and low beam, while others will manage high and low beam using the same globe.

Most headlight and park light globes can be replaced with the headlight casing in place. The method to replace a blown headlight will vary between vehicles but they are usually held in by a spring clip or twist lock and accessed from behind the headlight casing.

When removing and installing a new globe remember to wear latex gloves. Natural oils from your skin can be detrimental to the globe and shorten its lifespan.

Windscreen Wipers

Remembering to maintain wiper blades regularly can maximize visibility and prevent damage to your windscreen.  Squeaking, streaking, wet spots and chattering are signs that your windscreen wipers may need replacing.

Every windscreen wiper consists of two main components - the blade, which is attached to the wiper arm, and the rubber, which is attached to the blade and comes into contact with the windscreen.

Your windscreen wiper may either be a two-part assembly where the blade and rubber can be detached and replaced seperately, or one-part where the blade and rubber are connected together as one unit.

So depending on the type of wipers you use you can either replace the rubber only or the entire wiper blade assembly.

Oil and Oil Filter Change

Oil is the lifeblood of your engine, keeping parts lubricated and running smoothly. Over time, engine oil degrades and becomes contaminated with dirt and debris, reducing its effectiveness. Without regular oil changes, engine components experience increased friction, which leads to overheating and potentially irreversible damage.

As a rule of thumb most oil filters should be replaced any time you change your engine oil.  Access to the oil filter is vehicle dependant but it is usually screwed into the engine block or close by in the engine bay.

Your vehicle also relies on other fluids to function properly, including coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid and power steering fluid.  Whilst it is possible to change these fluids yourself, the consequences of not following the correct procedure can be serious.  We would therefore recommend power steering and brake fluid to only be changed by a professional.

Air Filter

Changing a dirty air filter is probably the easiest and least expensive maintenance procedure you can do, and it really benefits the performance life of your engine.

A vehicle engine needs air to breath. The more clean air, the better. An engine air filter, which is different from the cabin air filter, traps solid pollutants so they can't get into the engine. Most manufacturers recommend replacement of the air filter every two years or 30,000 miles.  If you drive your car offroad or in dusty conditions consider replacing more frequently.

Spark Plugs

Your spark plugs have one of the most important jobs in your vehicle, which is to provide the spark that powers the engine.

If your car doesn’t accelerate as quickly as it used to or feels sluggish, this could be traced back to worn spark plugs.  Without a strong spark, your engine may not produce the power needed for quick acceleration.

Faulty spark plugs can lead to a range of issues that can cause long term damage to your engine.  Check the spark plug service intervals in your owners manual to know how often they need replacing.
